Schumacher ‘a high chance’ of returning to IndyCar in 2027

The eighth place finish in his 12th series start comes amid mounting speculation over Schumacher’s future in the North American single-seater series.

According to Racer, the German driver has sponsorship that will keep him on track in 2027.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s line-up currently consists of full-time entries for Graham Rahal, Louis Foster and Schumacher.

Reports have emerged in recent weeks that RLL may sell its third charter to Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.

With Rahal a lock and Foster signed on a multi-year deal, that would leave Schumacher on the outer.

When asked about his latest result and what it meant for his prospects, Schumacher suggested he would be back next year.

“I think the pace overall this year has been showing that anyway,” said Schumacher.

“People know what they get and obviously this will hopefully put it into the books that we are able to do this consistently.

“I think there’s a high chance I’ll be here next year.”

Schumacher qualified 16th at Nashville before racing his way into the top 10, running as high as sixth.

Speaking post-race, the 27-year-old said he was not surprised by the result.

“The pace has always been good enough to run in the top 10,” he said.

“To actually put it out on track is a great achievement, but I knew that it was possible all along.

“It’s not like it just happened [overnight] or we got lucky or whatever.

“It was really just a nice, solid race. That’s the kind of result we can expect from us. I think even higher was possible.

“We were a bit cautious with some of the high line stuff. I saw a lot of people going high and wash out.

“I had one of those moments too in the race, so I just wanted to make sure we stayed in the race and score points that we deserve.

“Solid finish but I there was much more in it.”

Schumacher was supported by Australia’s Ryan Briscoe, who this year moved to RLL in a driver coaching capacity.

Speaking with Frontstretch, Briscoe said he was impressed by Schumacher’s performance.

“He drove so well. It looked like it was difficult for everyone out there today. It was really slick, the marbles were really becoming a factor,” he said.

“I was just trying to give him a bit of guidance with what the marbles were looking like and what lines were looking preferable.

“The team, everyone, just did a great job this weekend.

“All weekend, Mick has just been super confident, had great qualifying, and just ran a race of a veteran today, honestly.

“The pit stops were all really good as well. He really needed this result. It’s been a tough season and a few missed opportunities.

“This will be great for the points, great for his confidence, and I’m just really proud for him and the whole team right now.”

Nashville marked just the fourth oval start in Schumacher’s short IndyCar career.

He was 18th at Phoenix, 18th again at Indianapolis and 16th at Gateway. He’ll have two more oval races this year at Milwaukee.

He no longer sits at the bottom of the standings, demoting Juncos Hollinger Racing driver Sting Ray Robb to last.
